Pretty much everyone I know has a love-hate relationship with snow. We all love how pretty it is and swoon at the first sight of the fluffy white stuff. But a few days after that first magical snowfall we’re already growing tired of it. It’s inevitable that even the most die-hard winter fans (myself included) quickly become skeptics and Scrooges, especially as soon as we have to dig our cars out of huge heaps of snow.
But last winter I had an epiphany. In early February Chicago was hit with Snowpocolypse. People didn’t leave their homes for two or three days, kids went sledding in the middle of major streets and the whole city marveled at the fact that more than two feet of snow could fall on our fair city. On day two of being cooped up in my apartment I decided that I was done with all the doom and gloom of Snowmageddon and instead I was going to celebrate this (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime occasion by making some winter wonderland crafts. Leave it to a crafter to turn disastrous weather into a DIY project, right?!
Anyway, I decided to make this adorable snowman decoration since I was waaay too lazy to go outside and actually build a real snowman myself. Isn’t he cute? I already had some white Fun Fur Yarn that I had ordered online from CutRateCrafts and I scrounged up the rest of the supply list pretty easily. Not only did this fuzzy little guy turn out to be a great addition to my holiday decorations — he was the hit of my Christmas party! — but making him actually put me in a better mood when I was snowed in.
So the moral of the story is that even though they’re predicting a worse- than-normal winter for most of the country, you don’t have to be all doom and gloom for the next four or five months. Turn the weather into a craft inspiration and see what fun ideas you can come up with! You’ll love it, I promise!
Still not convinced? I did some of the footwork for you and poked around the Web to see what kinds of cool snow-inspired projects I could find. Here are some of the crafts on my to-do list this winter:
